Wild Darling by Alexandra Moody A Wholesome YA Hockey Romance Full of Enemies-to-Lovers Chemistry

If you’re looking for a YA hockey romance with enemies-to-lovers tension, slow-burn chemistry, and plenty of banter, trust me when I say Wild Darling by Alexandra Moody has you covered! This wholesome young adult romance combines competitive hockey, old grudges, family expectations, and a romance that neither Parker nor Kenzie sees coming.

The third book in Alexandra Moody’s Darling Devils series, Wild Darling follows Parker Darling and Kenzie Foster as they go from enemies to teammates and, eventually, something much harder to ignore.

What Is Wild Darling About?

Parker Darling is ready to step into the spotlight. With his older brothers off playing hockey in college, Parker is determined to become captain of the Ransom Devils. But his plans immediately hit a problem when a new coach arrives at the rink, and the coach already has a reason to dislike him.

And that reason is none other than Kenzie Foster.

Years earlier, Parker and Kenzie made a mistake that neither of them has forgotten. Now Kenzie's father is the new coach, and Kenzie is dealing with her own hockey dreams. She's a talented goalie, but her father has forbidden her from playing.

When circumstances give Kenzie an opportunity to get back on the ice, she and Parker find themselves needing to work together. Unfortunately for both of them, working together might be easier than ignoring the chemistry between them.

She Plays Hockey. He Wants to Be Captain. Things Get Complicated.

The Romance Tropes in Wild Darling

If you're choosing your next YA romance based on tropes (no judging, I do it too!), this one has plenty to tempt you.

Enemies to Lovers

Parker and Kenzie don't start out as secret admirers pretending to hate each other. They genuinely have history, resentment, and reasons to clash.

That makes their transition from enemies to something more especially fun for readers who love a little friction before the romance takes over. And Alexandra Moody has mastered the art of writing that friction almost to perfection!

Hockey Romance

Hockey isn't simply background scenery in Wild Darling. Parker and Kenzie are both deeply connected to the sport, and their hockey goals play a huge part in the story.

If you enjoy YA books where the characters' passions are woven into the romance, you need to add this one to your TBR.

Forced Teamwork

Parker and Kenzie may not want to spend time together, but hockey has other plans. They have to put their differences aside and work toward a common goal, which gives their relationship plenty of opportunities to develop.

And, of course, being around someone you supposedly can't stand all the time isn't exactly great for keeping romantic feelings under control. (Let’s take a sec to sigh here.)

Slow-Burn Chemistry

The romance builds through tension, banter, competition, and proximity rather than appearing out of nowhere.

That makes Wild Darling a perfect fit for readers who enjoy romances where the characters gradually realize that their feelings have changed.

Rivalry and Banter

Parker and Kenzie have plenty to disagree about, and their competitive personalities give the story its playful edge.

Their rivalry creates room for the kind of back-and-forth that makes enemies-to-lovers romances one of my favorite tropes.

First Love

At its heart, Wild Darling is also a young adult romance about figuring out what you want, taking chances, and discovering that your feelings don't always follow the plan, but they might take you exactly where you’re supposed to be.

“Have you ever hated a song the first time you heard it' I said. 'And the more it comes on the radio, the more it drives you insane But then, after a while, you start humming it everywhere you go. You know all the words. It's on all your playlists. And somehow, despite everything you thought before, it becomes your favorite song' 'Uh...' 'Mackenzie's my song. And I have no idea what I'm going to do.”

Why Hockey Fans Might Enjoy Wild Darling

One of the things that makes Wild Darling stand out is how closely the romance is connected to hockey.

Parker is determined to lead the Ransom Devils, while Kenzie is trying to find her way back onto the ice despite her father's objections. Their individual goals give them plenty to fight for outside their growing attraction.

That combination gives the book both a sports-romance storyline and a coming-of-age feel, rather than making the hockey element simply a backdrop for the romance.

Is Wild Darling Part of a Series?

Yes. Wild Darling is Book 3 in Alexandra Moody's Darling Devils series. The series begins with Rival Darling, followed by Grumpy Darling, before moving to Parker's story in Wild Darling, released earlier this year. But that’s not all, folks! Alexandra Moody (bless her) has more in store for us. Rebel Darling is releasing on November 3!

The three books focus on different Darling brothers and they can all be read as standalones. But if you enjoy getting to know a family through multiple romances, you may want to start from the beginning of the series.

Final Thoughts - Wild Darling by Alexandra Moody: A Wholesome YA Hockey Romance Full of Enemies-to-Lovers Chemistry

Wild Darling brings together two things romance readers can't seem to get enough of: enemies-to-lovers chemistry and hockey romance.

Parker and Kenzie have history, competitive goals, and plenty of reasons to stay away from each other. Unfortunately for them, hockey keeps putting them in the same place at the same time.

And that's exactly where the fun begins. If you're looking for a wholesome YA hockey romance with banter, slow-burn chemistry, enemies-to-lovers tension, and a happily-ever-after, Wild Darling is one to add to your reading list.
