Where to Stay in Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Where to Stay in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. A Complete Guide to Accommodation in the Northernmost Town

If you’re planning a trip to the Svalbard, choosing where to stay in Longyearbyen, a.k.a the right base for your Arctic adventure, is essential. Booking it in advanced? Almost mandatory!

Almost all visitors to the Svalbard archipelago stay in Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town. Despite its remote location you’ll find a surprising range of comfortable hotels, guesthouses, and cozy lodges that make exploring the Arctic wilderness much easier.

When visiting Longyearbyen (and most remote destinations for that matter), it’s important to book a hotel in advance. Despite the above mentioned wide variety of options, accommodation can get limited in this remote Arctic town. This is particularly the case during peak travel seasons like summer and northern lights season (think dreamy white Christmas and New Years Eve). Flights, tours, and expedition cruises bring in many visitors, so hotels can fill up quickly and prices often rise closer to travel dates. Needless to say, choosing the right hotel in Longyearbyen can make a big difference in your Arctic experience. Especially because of the town’s remote location and extreme weather conditions.

The right accommodation not only fits your travel budget. It also offers comfort, convenient access to tours and restaurants, and amenities that help you relax after long days exploring Svalbard.

🛏️Lodge Stays

Funken Lodge

A boutique-style hotel with a more luxurious feel. Think elegant interiors, excellent dining, and a quiet atmosphere slightly above town. It’s ideal if you want something a bit more upscale and atmospheric. If you stay here and bubbles are your thing, make sure to book a champagne tasting in advanced! (Not a guest? No problem! If you’re into champagne, you can still book this experience on their website!)

Fun fact: Funken Lodge is one of the most historic buildings in Longyearbyen, with roots tied directly to Svalbard’s coal-mining era. The building was originally constructed in 1946–47 by the mining company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani as the “Funktionærmessa” — housing and social quarters for the company’s administrative staff and visiting dignitaries.

Svalbard Hotell | Lodge

A comfortable, centrally located hotel with modern rooms and easy access to everything in town. A solid choice for convenience in the heart of Longyearbyen. Svalbard Hotell | Lodge is the apartment-style branch of the Svalbard Hotell group in Longyearbyen. With its apartment suits, kitchens and living areas, it is the perfect choice for longer stays, expedition travelers, researchers, and families.

🛏️ Mid-range & Cozy Stays

Radisson Blu Polar Hotel Spitsbergen

This is one of the most popular and comfortable options in town. It offers much more than just rooms. A sauna and a jacuzzi (perfect after Arctic excursions), the northernmost pub and a restaurant with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains are some of its best treats! It’s also centrally located, making it easy to access restaurants, shops, and tour pick-ups. This hotel is said to have the best breakfast selection in town!

Fun fact: Part of this hotel was actually built using sections from a hotel connected to the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. Specifically, a wing from the former Tråseth Hotel was dismantled after the Games and transported all the way to Svalbard. The reused structure became part of the hotel complex in Longyearbyen when the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel was completed in 1995.

Svalbard Hotell | Polarfareren

Svalbard Hotell | Polfareren blends modern Scandinavian comfort with the spirit of Arctic exploration. Located in the heart of Longyearbyen, the hotel offers a warm, contemporary base for travelers who want easy access to restaurants, excursions, museums, and the harbor while still feeling immersed in Svalbard’s polar atmosphere.

Even though this is one of the newer full-service hotels in Longyearbyen, its identity is deeply tied to Svalbard’s polar exploration heritage rather than the mining-company tradition.

Fun fact: Its name, “Polfareren” (“The Polar Explorer”), references the Norwegian polar explorer Eivind Astrup, who participated in Arctic and Greenland expeditions in the late 1800s. The hotel uses exploration history as a core theme throughout its architecture and interior design.

Mary-Ann's Polarrigg

Mary-Ann’s Polarrigg is one of the most distinctive places to stay in Longyearbyen, and it stands out because it isn’t a conventional hotel at all. It’s a creative reuse of former miners’ barracks transformed into an eclectic Arctic lodge full of personality.

The hotel is arranged around several connected buildings and a courtyard, mixing simple rooms with more comfortable “upgraded” options. Facilities include communal kitchens, lounges, a sauna, and the atmospheric Vinterhagen restaurant, which acts as a social hub for guests.

Fun fact: It was originally built as coal miners’ accommodation. However, Mary-Ann Dahle gradually converted the complex from the late 1990s onward into a hybrid hotel with strong links to Svalbard’s mining heritage. She didn't strip away its industrial past. Thanks to her, the property preserves it: rough wooden walls, salvaged mining equipment, and repurposed objects are part of the décor and identity of the place.

🛏️ Budget-friendly Stays

Coal Miners’ Cabins

Located in Nybyen, the upper part of Longyearbyen, this is a budget-friendly and character-filled option for your stay. Rooms are simple but warm, and the communal atmosphere makes it great for solo travelers or those joining tours. In all its coziness, CMC reflects Svalbard’s mining history in its design, with narrow corridors, shared kitchens and bathrooms, basic wooden rooms, historic mining photographs and artifacts, and a practical “Arctic worker housing” feel.

Fun fact: CMC is a historic miners’ barracks complex in Nybyen (“New Town”), originally built to house coal miners working for Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani. Unlike the more luxurious Funken Lodge, CMC preserved the simpler working-class atmosphere of Svalbard’s mining years.

Gjestehuset 102 - Hostel

Gjestehuset 102 is one of Longyearbyen’s most characterful and historically rooted places to stay — a former miners’ barracks in Nybyen that has been transformed into a warm, social Arctic hostel.

Also located in Nybyen, the hostel is surrounded by old mining infrastructure, glaciers, and mountains, giving it a distinctly remote Arctic feel. Its position away from the town center also makes it popular for Northern Lights viewing during the dark season.

Fun fact: Originally built in 1946 to house coal miners working in Mine 2B, the building once accommodated some of the settlement’s most experienced workers and became known locally as the “Millionaires’ Barracks” because of its comparatively high standard for the era.

❄️ Unique Stays & Apartments

If you prefer independence, there are also self-catering apartments in Airbnb scattered around Longyearbyen. These are great for longer stays or travelers who want more flexibility with meals and space.

📍 What to Expect When Staying in Longyearbyen

  • No roads connecting settlements—everything is centered here
  • Accommodation options for all budgets (if booked in advanced)
  • Midnight sun in summer and polar night in winter
  • Strict safety rules (you’ll see polar bear warning signs everywhere)
  • Easy access to Arctic tours like snowmobiling, glacier hikes, and wildlife safaris

💡 Tips for Booking

  • Book early because accommodation fills quickly in peak summer and winter seasons
  • Check if breakfast is included (many places include it and others offer the option to add it)
  • Choose centrally located hotels if you’re joining multiple tours, though some tours offer pick-ups in Nybyen as well
  • Consider staying at least 2–3 nights to experience both town and wilderness activities, though a 5-night stay is recommended for a full Arctic experience

Final Thoughts

Where to stay in Longyearbyen is less about luxury and more about immersion. With their own peculiarities and personalities, every hotel or lodge puts you right on the edge of the Arctic wilderness, where glaciers, mountains, and polar silence are just beyond town limits. Whether you choose a cozy lodge or a boutique hotel, your base in Svalbard will be part of the adventure itself!
