Scotland's west coast is full of dramatic castles, ruined fortresses and centuries-old strongholds, and Oban makes a fantastic base for exploring them.

While Oban itself is best known as the gateway to the islands, its location on the west coast of Argyll also puts you within easy reach of some fascinating historic sites. From a castle overlooking the sea to ancient ruins surrounded by woodland, there are plenty of places to add to a Scotland road trip.

Some are only a short drive from Oban, while others make excellent stops if you're exploring Argyll, Mull, the Highlands or the west coast of Scotland.

1. Dunstaffnage Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 5 miles
Approximate drive: 10 minutes

One of the easiest castles near Oban to visit, Dunstaffnage Castle is an excellent first stop if you want to explore the area's medieval history. The imposing stone fortress sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Firth of Lorn and dates back to the 13th century.

Its thick walls and massive towers give you a good sense of just how formidable medieval Scottish castles could be. But that’s not all. The castle has also had connections with some fascinating figures from Scottish history. Robert the Bruce captured Dunstaffnage in the early 14th century, and Flora MacDonald, famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after the Jacobite rising, was imprisoned here in 1746.

Today, you can explore the castle ruins and walk around the grounds while taking in views across the surrounding landscape.

2. Dunollie Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 1 mile
Approximate drive: 5 minutes

You don't even have to leave Oban to discover one of its most atmospheric castles. How cool is that? The ruins of Dunollie Castle sit dramatically on a rocky headland just north of town, overlooking Oban Bay.

The site has a long history and was an important stronghold of Clan MacDougall for centuries. Although much of the medieval castle is now in ruins, its location is what makes Dunollie so memorable. From the hilltop, you can look across the water towards the islands and watch boats coming and going from Oban.

The surrounding Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds also offer an opportunity to learn more about the history of Clan MacDougall and the area.

3. Gylen Castle, Isle of Kerrera

Getting there: Ferry from Oban + walk

For something a little more adventurous, make your way across the water to Gylen Castle on the Isle of Kerrera. The small tower house was built in the 16th century by Clan MacDougall and occupies a spectacular position overlooking the Sound of Kerrera.

The castle was attacked and burned during the Scottish Civil War in 1647, leaving the atmospheric ruins you can see today. Getting here is part of the experience. You'll need to take the passenger ferry from Oban to Kerrera and then walk across the island to the castle.

The combination of island scenery, coastal walking and historic ruins makes this one of the most memorable castle excursions from Oban.

4. Castle Stalker

Distance from Oban: Around 20 miles
Approximate drive: 35 minutes

I swear, few Scottish castles have a more dramatic setting than Castle Stalker. Standing on a tiny tidal island in Loch Laich, the four-storey tower house appears almost to float on the water. It was built in the 15th century and became associated with Clan Stewart of Appin before eventually passing to the Campbells.

Its extraordinary setting has also made it popular with photographers and film fans. If the castle looks strangely familiar, you may recognize it from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The castle is privately owned, so access to the interior is limited, but you can enjoy spectacular views of it from the mainland.

5. Castle Tioram

Distance from Oban: Around 65 miles
Approximate drive: Around 2 hours

If you're willing to venture farther from Oban, Castle Tioram makes a spectacular addition to a west coast road trip. The ruined medieval castle sits on a tidal island at the meeting point of Loch Moidart and the River Shiel.

The castle was an important stronghold of Clan MacDonald of Clanranald and has a long and turbulent history. Today, you cannot enter the castle itself because of safety concerns, but its location is reason enough to make the journey. Surrounded by water, mountains and rugged countryside, Castle Tioram has an almost cinematic quality.

6. Kilchurn Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 30 miles
Approximate drive: 40 minutes

Standing at the head of Loch Awe, Kilchurn Castle is one of the most recognizable ruins in Argyll. The castle was built in the 15th century by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy and was later expanded into a larger fortified residence. Its location is spectacular, particularly when the surrounding mountains are reflected in the waters of Loch Awe.

The castle is currently accessed on foot from a roadside car park, although the interior may be closed depending on conditions. For photographers, this is one of those places where the journey is almost as rewarding as the destination.

7. Carnasserie Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 28 miles
Approximate drive: 50 minutes

For something a little different, visit Carnasserie Castle, a fascinating 16th-century tower house near Kilmartin. The castle was built for John Carswell, Bishop of Argyll, in the 1560s and has an unusual architectural character.

Unlike some of the ruined castles on this list, Carnasserie retains many of its original architectural features, including a tower, hall and spiral staircase. Its location also makes it particularly convenient if you're exploring the Kilmartin Glen, one of Scotland's most important prehistoric landscapes.

That means you can combine a castle visit with ancient standing stones, burial monuments and other archaeological sites.

8. Inveraray Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 37 miles
Approximate drive: 50 minutes

If you're looking for a castle that feels very different from the dramatic ruins above, Inveraray Castle is a wonderful option. Located on the shores of Loch Fyne, this magnificent Gothic Revival castle has been the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell, since the 18th century.

Unlike many castles in the area, Inveraray is still a grand country residence, surrounded by extensive gardens and woodland. The castle is also recognizable from television — it was used as a filming location for Downton Abbey.

If you're visiting Oban and have a full day available, Inveraray works particularly well as part of a scenic road trip through Argyll.

9. Eilean Donan Castle

Distance from Oban: Around 110 miles
Approximate drive: Around 3 hours

This is the furthest one on the list of castles near Oban, so Eilean Donan isn't a quick trip from Oban. But if you're planning a longer Scotland road trip, it's worth considering.

Located where three sea lochs meet, Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognizable castles in Scotland. The castle's origins stretch back centuries, although the building you see today is largely the result of a 20th-century reconstruction.

Its setting is spectacular, with mountains rising behind the castle and water surrounding it on several sides. It's particularly worth adding if you're travelling onward from Oban towards Skye and the northwest Highlands.

Castle-Hopping from Oban: How to Plan Your Trip

You don't need to visit all nine castles near Oban during one trip. In fact, I'd recommend grouping them according to how much time you have or choosing the ones that best fit your itinerary.

If you only have one day

Stay close to Oban and visit:

Dunollie Castle → Dunstaffnage Castle → Gylen Castle

This gives you a mixture of castle ruins, coastal scenery and an island experience without spending the entire day driving.

If you have a full day for a road trip

Consider:

Kilchurn Castle → Carnasserie Castle → Inveraray Castle

This makes a lovely route through Argyll and gives you a mix of ruins, historic houses and beautiful landscapes.

If you're taking a longer Scotland road trip

Add:

Castle Stalker → Castle Tioram → Eilean Donan Castle

These work particularly well if you're continuing west or north towards the Highlands and Isle of Skye.

Tips for Visiting Castles Near Oban

Check opening times before you go

Not every castle on this list is open year-round, and some are ruins that can only be viewed from outside.

Expect Scottish weather

The west coast can be wet and windy, even in summer. Bring a waterproof jacket and suitable footwear.

Bring your camera
